Course
outline
This popular one day course is held at Emmanuel College,
Cambridge and will also be held at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. It describes how drug
discovery is undertaken in the modern pharmaceutical and biotechnology
industries, using case histories to illustrate key points.
Technical jargon is clearly explained with no prior knowledge
assumed on the part of the delegates, many of whom will have
had no scientific training.
Delegate
profile
Delegates
from a wide variety of backgrounds who work with the pharmaceutical
and biotechnology industries benefit from this course. These
include new staff within the industry itself, personnel in
university technology transfer departments, recruitment organisations,
translation companies, sales and marketing professionals as
well as legal and financial firms; it also provides background
information for journalists who cover healthcare issues in
the media.

Course
outline
Based on the "How the Drug Discovery Industry Works" course, this full day workshop is specifically designed for the freelance translator who deals with pharmaceutical jargon. Delegates are given a clear explanation of technical jargon and concepts that cover the discovery of
drugs in the laboratory and their development into commercial products via clinical trials. The session
is concluded with a question and answer session to discuss items of specific interest to individual
delegates. This part has been shown to be particularly useful for identifying websites and other
resources of use to the freelance translator covering the life sciences.
Delegate profile
Freelance translators from all language specialisations. The course is delivered in English and does not cover specific languages. Delegates both with and without a scientific background will benefit.

Course
outline
Our well-regarded one day course is used by the
Medical Research Council and ERBI. Unlike many presentation
skills courses, this is designed specifically for the practising
scientist. We cover all aspects of verbal scientific communication,
asking delegates to present their own research in a conference
format prompting feedback on style and content. Because of
our expertise in both science and communication skills, we
help to solve common problems (such as nervousness and voice
control), as well as those unique to presenting the results
of scientific research.
Delegate profile
Junior research scientists (all disciplines) from academia
and industry, particularly those starting to present their
work at conferences and seminars. It is also useful for more
senior scientists aiming to improve their performance and
scientists returning to the field after a career break.

Course
outline
This in-house course provides expert guidance on practical
sales and marketing to scientists and engineers. It covers
the key aspects of building and maintaining customer relationships
and includes techniques for market research, focussed marketing,
creating business opportunities and closing deals. The trainers
(one a PhD level scientist and the other a career sales professional)
have over 25 years combined experience in the sales and marketing
of technical products and services; both currently work in
the hi-tech sector.
Delegate profile
This is particularly relevant to the growing number of
technical specialists without commercial experience who wish
to move into a business development role within their organisations;
it is also useful for those managing or starting their own
science or technology-based business.
